Visa Conditions

As an international student you need to be aware of your student visa conditions to ensure you comply with regulations and have a positive study experience. It is also important to be aware that AMPA has legal requirements to notify the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) of information in certain circumstances, for example, if you defer your studies at AMPA.

To maintain a student visa you must hold a valid Confirmation of Enrolment (COE) that is issued by AMPA during the enrolment process.

Ensure you are familiar with your student visa conditions by visiting the DHA website and check conditions that apply to you and your family members online at VEVO. Below are details of only some of the visa conditions that apply to student visas.

Work Limitations

Once your course has commenced, you are permitted to work in paid employment up to 48 hours per fortnight in term time. A fortnight means the period of 14 days starting on a Monday. For more information see the DHA website.

Maintain Course Requirements

To maintain your student visa you must remain enrolled in your course and meet AMPA’s course progression requirements. If you are not meeting course progression requirements AMPA will be in contact with you to commence an intervention strategy to assist you to get back on track in your studies and meet standard requirements.

If after an intervention you are still unable to meet course progression requirements, you may be excluded from AMPA as per the Students at Academic Risk Policy. You will have the right to submit a complaint about this decision as per the Academic Appeals Policy. If you appeal the decision and your appeal is unsuccessful or you do not appeal the decision, you will be reported to DHA for failure to maintain course progress (or attendance), and this may result in your visa being cancelled.

Full-Time Study

International students must enrol in a full-time load at AMPA. The full-time study load is 20 credit points per session. AMPA operates within an undergraduate framework of 3 Teaching sessions (Trimesters) per year. Credit points apply to all units and represent a measure of the student workload and contact hours for each unit. All undergraduate units at AMPA are either 2, 4 or 6 credit points each.

Generally, International students enrol in 7, 8 or 9 units per session at AMPA.

Dance majors = 7 units / trimester
Contemporary, Classical, Composition and Music Production majors = 8 units / trimester
Music Theatre majors = 9 units / trimester

As a guide for Undergraduate European students:

2 AMPA credit points = 3 ECTS credits
4 AMPA credit points = 6 ECTS credits
6 AMPA credit points = 9 ECTS credits
20 AMPA credit points = 30 ECTS credits

As a guide for Undergraduate US students:

2 AMPA credit points = approx. 1.5 US Credit Hours
4 AMPA credit points = approx. 3 US Credit Hours
6 AMPA credit points = approx. 4.5 US Credit Hours
20 AMPA credit points = approx. 16 US Credit Hours

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

Student visa holders and their dependents are required to hold Overseas Student Heath Cover (OSHC) for the duration of their visa. OSHC provides medical and hospital insurance during your stay in Australia.

You can elect for AMPA to organise your OSHC during your acceptance process or you can purchase your own OSHC using an Australian Government approved provider. Students from certain countries including Norway, Sweden and Belgium may have special arrangements under their own national schemes and are requested to contact DHA for further information.

Under 18 Years of Age

For a student visa holder under 18 years of age, you must maintain the accommodation, support and general welfare arrangements for the duration of your stay in Australia. Refer to the Under 18 Student Policy in the Student Handbook.

any changes to your address and contact details during your enrolment at AMPA

AMPA Backstage with Gaia Scarf

AMPA Backstage with Gaia Scarf

(AMPA BMus Student, Trimester 2)

Check out first year AMPA student Gaia Scarf, who recently won Best New Artist at the AMPA Awards Night, with her original “Where the Heart is”. Gaia is a contemporary singer, songwriter and guitarist from the Blue Mountains.

I sat down with Gaia to talk about composing, performing and life at the ACADEMY OF MUSIC AND PERFORMING ARTS.

How long have you been studying at AMPA and what do you like about it?

I finished my first semester at the end of last year, 2013. I felt like I came into one big, dysfunctional family lunch on my first day. Everyone knows everyone and it's just one big, happy, crazy family really, that's what I loved best. And the fact that everyone is so supportive and encouraging of everyone else makes it so much easier to excel.

What inspires you? What makes you want to sit down and write a song?

I love watching live music. Seeing other musicians share their music sparks so much motivation in me, I think that's probably my strongest source of inspiration. But I write a lot of poetry, which is a lot easier for me than writing a song, so it's great to find a concept that I love, write a poem about it and morph it into music if I can.

Tell me about your favourite artists and musicians.

I have too many to even list. Paramore is my ultimate favourite band. But I'll also go crazy about anything from The Story So Far to Keaton Henson to Beyonce to The Beatles.

You recently won Best New Artist at the AMPA Awards Night.

How did it feel to win the award in your first semester at AMPA?

I think that was the biggest shock of my life. I remember listening to the nominees being read out on stage and settling further into my seat thinking that there was no way I'd get the award. So, yeah, it felt pretty amazing hearing my name called out, especially when I was up against some of the most amazing musicians I've ever met. Huge confidence boost, wow!

What’s been a stand out in your music career so far?

Because I cover so many songs and release them on Youtube, rarely there is the special occasion that the artist actually sees and acknowledges my cover. It's happened a few times to me, sometimes by people I really look up to. But I think when Vic Fuentes, singer of Pierce The Veil, told me that I was a better sing than him on my Youtube page, that was probably the highlight of my life. Screamed for about 3 hours.

What’s your dream as a musician?

I would love to just make a name for myself. I can't wait to get a collection of originals together and finally make an album. Also, the idea of people singing along to my own songs is so unbelievably exciting.

If you could play with any musician (past/present/dead/alive) who it would be and why?

I'd kill to sing with Hayley Williams. Paramore as a band has changed my perspective on life and some of their lyrics have helped me so much (as lame as that sounds). To be able to perform with them would change my life forever!

New Postgraduate Courses at AMPA!

2 June 2014, 2:44 am

AMPA has a clear vision of being at the forefront of the arts education industry in Australia, and we are excited to announce that several major projects earmarked for 2014-2015 (as part of the AMPA Strategic Plan) are now coming to fruition.

The first of these projects to be announced is the introduction of new postgraduate courses at AMPA. The Master of Music and Graduate Diploma of Music will commence in 2014, and will allow graduate students an exceptional opportunity to enhance their understanding of music and specialise in a number of key professional areas. The courses will aim to increase students' breadth of knowledge in support of an active teaching career either in the private or government sector, at primary, secondary or tertiary level studio teaching, and will also assist experienced and advanced practitioners who, having achieved distinguished professional careers in the public arena, can derive further knowledge from a music related academic and research environment. The courses will also assist musicians in industry specific areas of performance, composition and song writing, studio teaching, and music retail and distribution.

We look forward to introducing these pivotal new courses in 2014, and please stay tuned for further announcements on the latest developments at AMPA.

P!NK band take some time out to visit AMPA students

2 June 2014, 2:39 am

AMPA rolled out the red carpet in August for an exclusive workshop from the band of none other than international superstar P!NK.

Drummer, Mark Schulman, Eva Gardner (Bass) and Justin Derrico (Guitar) took some time out of P!NK’s ‘Truth About Love’ tour to visit students at the Rozelle campus to give an intimate Rhythm clinic.

After setting up some rather serious music gear, and sound checking to perfection, the trio entered the stage in an elaborate and dramatic entrance to Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody.

Mark, Eva and Justin each shared some of their stories, gave tips and tricks, and performed in an intimate workshop setting.

Some students were lucky enough to be invited onto the stage to jam with Mark and Eva.

''You're thrown an unexpected experience; you have no idea what they might come up with,'' bassist Eva Gardner said, of jamming with students.

''It's fun to jam and have a wonderful two-minute experience.''

After the performances, the trio hung around to sign autographs for students and to answer any individual questions that students had.

Collectively Mark, Eva and Justin have toured with the who’s who of the music biz including artists such as FOREIGNER, SHERYL CROW, STEVIE NICKS, DESTINY’S CHILD, BILLY IDOL, CHER, THE CALLING and THE MARS VOLTA.

AMPA was please to host past and future students, staff, members of the public, and press for the event. You can read more about the Rhythm Clinic in the Inner West Courier, here.
